Key suspect in Piliyandala shooting arrested

A key suspect linked to the May 9 shooting incident in Piliyandala targeting officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) has been arrested from Medirigiriya. 

A PNB constable and an 11-year-old girl were killed while two police officers and several other civilians also sustained injuries in the incident, when a gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on the car carrying the PNB officers on their way to a raid. 

Police Media Unit said the suspect arrested yesterday (15), a 27-year-old resident of Meegama, Dharga Town had riden the motorbike from which the gunman opened fire. 

He is charged with conspiracy, aiding and abetting murder and murder. 

The suspect was arrested yesterday at about 11.15am from Medirigiriya by a team from the Mirihana Special Investigation Unit. Police also recovered 10 grams of heroin from the suspect's possession. 

Police further said the suspect had warrants out for his arrest in connection with court cases filed against him by Ambalangoda, Uragasmanhandiya and Ahungalla police stations.  

He is due to be produced before tbe Mathugama Magistrate's Court today.
