A 28-year-old Sri Lankan male passenger who was leaving for Singapore was apprehended by Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle out foreign currency amounting to more than Rs.47.3 million.
The suspect was apprehended at the Departure Lounge of the BIA last evening (5) by Customs officials based on information from Aviation Security staff. The foreign currency was found concealed in false bottoms of three traveling bags and inside folios of a stationary file, Sri Lanka Customs stated.
Saudi Riyal,Oman Riyal, Swiss Franc, Danish Kroner, Norwegian Kroner, Japanese Yen, Hong Kong Dollar, Euro and US Dollars were among the monies found from the suspect's possession.
The suspect is a resident of Negombo. Further investigations are ongoing.
