A stock military hardware suspected to have belonged to the LTTE have been unearthed from a well in Thelippalai, Kurumbansetti. The hardware, which includes mortar and artillery shells, were recovered on September 25 by officers from the Special Task Force's (STF) camp in Jaffna.
A resident who had recently moved back to his land after being displaced during the war, had first alerted police after seeing an unidentified object inside his well when he went to draw water from it. Thelippalai police had then notified the Mallakam Magistrate's Court and obtained a court order permitting the STF to inspect the well.
Accordingly, STF personnel who searched the well were able to recover a large stock of military hardware hidden inside the well. The items recovered included 28 rounds of RPG HEAT anti-tank shells, 23 RPG high explosive shells, 28 rounds of 60mm mortar shells, 6 rounds of 81mm mortar, 1600 rounds of GPMG machine gun ammunition, two artillery shells and 66 pistol grenades.
Further inspections of the well would be carried out and the recovered items would be subsequently destroyed, police stated.
