At least 26 tourist hotels and private residences suffered damage after large waves swept ashore in Kalutara North area this afternoon (7).
The waves came ashore around 2.00pm, sweeping inland and flooding many buildings along the coastal area.
Area residents say this is the second occasion already this year that large waves have swept inland. They expressed fears that more waves would come ashore during the night.
Authorities were seen taking steps this evening to repair the damage and constructing barriers to keep back more waves.
