Police have initiated an inquiry to decide on legal action against a driver for spreading false claims that he had been instructed to remove a miniature Buddha statue from the dashboard of his vehicle.
Issuing a statement, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said investigations have shown that a police officer had advised the driver to remove a floral decoration obstructing the windscreen of the vehicle.
This had been confirmed after statements had been recorded from four individuals and also the driver involved in the incident, the spokesman noted.
He explained that the police officer had pointed out that placing objects on the dashboard of the vehicle could obstruct a driver’s vision, thereby resulting in accidents.
Accordingly, the police spokesman stated that legal action will be taken against the driver for publishing a video, since it had been explicitly done with the intent of causing hate among communities.
He added that charges would be filed under the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights against the driver and for social media users who shared the video with similar intent.
