A road construction worker was killed by a leopard at the Kumana National Park yesterday (Apr 18) police said.
The leopard had attacked the victim while he was returning along with a group of other workers after dropping off some sand for road construction purposes at the park.
Attempts taken to rescue the worker by hurling stones at the leopard proved futile as the leopard had ran into the forest while dragging the victim along with its teeth.
The leopard had also attacked a wildlife officer who along with a group of officers had discovered the body of the construction worker some 100 metres away from the scene of the incident.
The wildlife officer is currently receiving treatment at the Akkaraipattu hospital, a police officer at the park said.
