The strike carried out by locomotive engine drivers was called off by the Locomotive Engine Drivers Union yesterday (Mar 06).
This was subsequent to a discussion that had taken place with Minister of Transport Arjuna Ranatunga.
The indefinite strike action was organised to protest against the recruitment of 12 railway drivers over the age of 45, which the union claimed was a departure from the normal procedure of recruitment that is adopted.
