Maldives Vice President arrested, charged with high treason MALE - Maldivian Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested on Saturday on return from an official trip to China and charged with “high treason” over the September 28 assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen, Maldives news media reported. Adeeb was arrested at 12pm, moments after his flight from Singapore landed at the international airport. A police spokesman was quoted by Minivan News as confirming that Adeeb was arrested over an explosion on Yameen’s speedboat on September 28. The government has said the blast was an assassination attempt. Former long-time President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has cancelled a planned trip to Bangladesh today. The Vice President, who has denied involvement, was taken to a detention centre at Dhoonidhoo. - ENDS -
