Man arrested with drugs is a candidate at local government polls - CaFFE

The Campaign for Free & Fair Elections (CaFFE) states that an individual who was arrested with a stock of illegal drugs worth millions of rupees in Amparai is a candidate who is contesting the upcoming local government election. 

The individual has been given nominations to contest the Akkaraipattu Municipal Council from the National Congress, CaFFE states in a media release. He was arrested yesterday by Ampara Police with a stock of illegal drugs. 

The election monitor also states that it has information that several individuals who have been linked to various crimes, including murder and extortion are due to be given nominations by political parties to contest the local government election. These include individuals from Hikkaduwa, Meetiyagoda and Habaraduwa. The organization states that voters in these areas have expressed alarm that those accused of underworld activity may be given the opportunity to contest for their local government bodies.
