More May day processions and rallies have got underway in various parts of the country with the main events due in Batticaloa, Galle and Colombo.
The SLFP - UPFA May day procession has opened in Batticaloa where President Maithripala Srisena is due to address the meeting.
One of the highlights would be some of the 16 members including former Ministers who quit the Unity government are expected to attend the SLFP rally . Among them are former Ministers S.B. Dissanayaka and John Seneviratne.
However, in Galle too some of the 16 members are due to attend the Joint Opposition rally presided over by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Among them are former Minister Chandima Weerakkody and former state Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena..
The JVP procession already has commenced from Campbell park and are making their way to the BRC grounds in Havlock town where the party leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka will preside over.
The UNP held its May day event on Sunday at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium, but some of the MPs provided various excuses and skipped the event. Some of them claimed they were not well.
Meanwhile several smaller parties and trade unions also are having their May day events today.
The government postponed the May day events in view of the Vesak events last week.
