The government today announced that media will not be allowed to cover the proceedings of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in future, Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando informed the Parliament today.
Reasoning for the decision, the Chief Whip Fernando said that the decision was taken after considering how former President and Prime Minister were targetted by false media agendas with COPE footage in past. He also noted that the move was to protect the public officials who, he claimed, were subjected to political victimization during the previous government.
SLPP National List Parliamentarian Charitha Herath who was appointed as the Chair of COPE told the Parliament that a decision on this is yet to be taken.
