Meethotamulla death toll on the rise; count increases to 27

News

The death toll in the Meethothotamula garbage dump collapse has risen to 27 with officials still finding it hard to give the exact number who may have been killed in the disaster, police said.

Police confirming the latest death toll at 27 by noon Monday said that officials were still gathering information to determine the details of the persons who were living there and the number who may have been killed.

Hundreds of soldiers backed by the villagers were continuing to search the location for more bodies with claims that there were more bodies under the pile of garbage.

Prime minister Ranil wickremesinghe on an official visit to Vietnam has decided to cut short his visit by two days and return tomorrow in view of the incident at Meethotamulla.

Meanwhile Minister of Megapolis Champika Ranawaka has declared that no local authority will be able to dump garbage in the Urban Development Authority lands from May 1.

The move is to affect many of the local authorities who make use of the UDA lands to dispose garbage
