Cabinet approval has been granted to set-up mental health units at two state hospitals in near future.
Accordingly, a Mental Health Unit will be established at the Kandy Teaching Hospital at a cost of Rs 503 million while a similar unit will be introduced at the Chilaw General Hospital at a cost of Rs 213.8 million.
Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne had put forward a proposal to this effect during yesterday’s cabinet meeting.
The proposal observed that 10 percent of the country's population were suffering from mental health disorders while 40 percent of patients were currently being treated for their ailments.
