The Meteorological Department has issued a red warning, predicting "very heavy" showers above 150 mm in the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Western provinces, over the next 24 hours.
According to the Department, fairly heavy falls above 75 mm could be experienced in some places in the North-western, Northern, Uva and Eastern provinces.
The weather forecast also said that the showery condition across the island would continue to be experienced in the coming days as well.
