President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Minister of Ports and Shipping Mahinda Samarasinghe as his representative on the Constitutional Council.
The President named Minister Samarasinghe as the term of his previous representative, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka, ended on September 5.
Minister Ranawaka has extended his support to present IGP Pujitha Jayasundera (for whom an extension has been sought) at a meeting chaired by the President where the latter has suggested the name of senior DIG S.M. Wickremasinghe as the next IGP, reliable sources said adding that this decision of not to extend the term of Minister Ranawaka was an immediate reaction for his action.
Minister Ranawaka was the UNP representative on the Constitutional Council and without considering this fact the President has appointed an SLFP Minister, the sources said. (Bandula)
