A total of 2646 suspects have been arrested over several offences during an island-wide police operation from 06 am until 09 pm yesterday (Mar 16).
Accordingly, 1790 suspects were arrested over the possession of narcotic substances such as heroin, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said. He noted that 623 warranted suspects were also arrested during this special operation.
Meanwhile, 125 suspects were arrested for selling liquor without a valid license, and consuming alcohol in public places. Further, 101 individuals were taken into custody by the police for committing several other offences.
The search operation which involved 13,186 personnel also saw the arrest of six individuals who were in the possession of firearms without a valid license.
One hand grenade was also taken into custody yesterday, the police spokesman said.
