More than 7.000 police officers are to be deployed for security during the Esala Perahera at the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple in Kandy, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said today (Aug 1).
Meanwhile, the Excise Department has instructed all liquor shops in the area to be closed between August 5 and 15, in keeping with the religious event.
Accordingly, liquor shops in Kandy, Peradeniya, Katugastota, Aladeniya, Ambatenna, Kadawatsathara, and the areas under the Gangawata Korale divisional secretariat will remain closed during this time period.
Meanwhile, liquor shops will also be closed in Madawala, Menikhinna, Digana, and Thalathuoya, the Excise Department noted.
