More time needed to fulfill remaining promises : PM

News

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (Sept 10) said more time was needed to fulfill the remainder of the promises made in 2015.

Addressing an event at Temple Trees, the Prime Minister pointed out that the government needs to abolish the executive presidency and provide political solutions to the problems faced by the people.

He conceded that the government did not have a simple majority or two-thirds majority in Parliament when it had been voted into power in 2015.

“We did not have the majority even after joining with the parties which agreed to abolish the executive presidency,” he said adding that they would work towards abolishing the executive Presidency in future.

Mr. Wickremesinghe also added that the Constitutional Council, on several occasions, had held talks on providing a political solution while adding that the government had fulfilled many promises.

"In the last few years, we have come to the fore through integration. However, five years is not enough to establish unity and an identity," Mr Wickremesinghe said.

He had made these remarks while addressing an event organised by the Ministry of National Languages to distribute appointment letters to qualified language trainers.
