The government is taking relevant measures to sign an agreement in order to establish a US Army Camp in Sri Lanka, SLFP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said yesterday (Jan 18).
Addressing an SLFP press briefing, he said that talks regarding the said project had taken place on August 18 last year.
"US Army troops, army equipment, including communication devices will be brought into Sri Lanka as a result of this agreement" Mr. Jayasekara said while adding that the Sri Lankan government has agreed to provide the facilites equivalent to that of the officials in the US embassy.
MP Jayasekara also pointed out that several countries including Iraq had to face severe conflicts after the establishment of US camps in their country.
"This matter should be put forward before Parliament" he urged.
The SLFP General Secretary also claimed that the UNP had signed several agreements that would bring about harmful effects to the country. Therefore, he called on the masses and the relevant stakeholders to find out about those agreements.
