Parliamentarian Kavinda Jayawardena has submitted a private member's proposal to bring the "Sharia" university in Batticaloa under the government's purview.
In the proposal, Mr. Jayawardena pointed out that the Sharia Law has created a sense of fear among the people due to its influence on extremist, racist and terrorist acts across the world.
"The country will be divided if universities are established based on different religions," he said adding that the peaceful nature of this country would be disrupted by the establishment of such educational institutions.
Therefore, the parliamentarian proposed that universities which fuel acts of racism must be brought under the government in a bid to establish a common educational facility which would provide an opportunity for the students of all faiths to pursue their higher education.
