Joint Opposition MP Wimal Weerawansa has been suspended from attending parliamentary sessions for two weeks while MP Prasanna Ranaweera was suspended from attending sessions for a period of four weeks.
The penalty was imposed on the MPs for breaching the Code of Conduct for MPs.
The suspension was announced following a vote on the matter. Accordingly, the motion against MP Ranaweera received 41 votes in favour of the suspension and 21 votes against it. Meanwhile, the motion on MP Weerawansa received 29 votes in favour and 21 against the suspension.
Reportedly MP Weerawansa has attended parliamentary sessions 279 times while MP Ranaweera has done so 79 times.
