President Maithripala Sirisena in his Independence Day message has said that "people with spirits invigorated by national customs, values and culture are needed" for the country to progress.
He made this remark while referring the the period during which Sri Lanka was under colonial rule.
"To entrust the future of the nation to minds enslaved by imperialism for more than a century, is more dangerous than being under colonial rule itself" the President said.
Mr. Sirisena also emphasised that the time has come to build the country's economy on the foundation of agriculture.
Further, President Sirisena said that the twin evils of poverty and corruption which are the enemies of national revival, must be eradicated.
