National Enviornment Act to be amended

The cabinet of ministers have approved a proposal to amend the National Environment Act in order to suit modern requirements.

Accordingly, amendments would be passed to draw emphasis on the following matters;

  • to regulate the production of chemical and toxic waste
  • the Preliminary Environmental Assessment test
  • strengthening laws to enter into multi-party environment-related agreements
  • prevention of damages caused to the environment by activities which do not require an Environmental Protection Licence
  • power to confiscate and destroy items which have been banned under the current Enviornmental Act

President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as enviornment minister had put forward a proposal in this regard during yesterday's cabinet meeting.
