At least 28 local fishermen were arrested this week alone in three separate incidents of engaging in illegal fishing activities, navy said.
Naval personnel attached to SLNS Mahanaga in Panama arrested three local fishermen on Sunday with an FGD engaged in illegal fishing between Sangamankanda and Thirukkovil sea areas. Two pairs of diving fins, a GPS, 10 Oxygen cylinders, 26 conch shells and 05 sea cucumbers were also taken into custody during the arrest.
The arrested persons and the items were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries (Olivil) for further investigations.
On Thursday the navy apprehended 24 local fisherman engaged in illegal fishing in two separate incidents. Two persons were arrested by the naval personnel attached to SLNS Gotabaya in Eastern Naval Command, along with a dinghy used for illegal fishing. The accused and the dinghy were handed over to the Assistance Director Fisheries in Trincomalee for onward investigations.
In Kalpitiya navy arrested 22 local fishermen with five FGD’s, 2 Fishing Nets, 5 GPSs, 3 pairs of Diving Fins and 3 Snorkel. The arrested people long with the items were handed over to Assistance Director Fisheries in Puttalam for further investigations.
