Navy divers were able to recover the dead bodies of five fishermen who had been missing after their multi-day fishing trawler had collided with a merchant vessel forty nautical miles south east of the Little Basses on January 31, Navy said in a statement. The bodies were found entangled in fishing nets.
One fisherman had been rescued by a nearby fishing vessel. In response to a request made by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Navy dispatched two Dvora craft, P 450 and P 485, in search of the missing fishermen. The recovered bodies were brought to the Galle fisheries harbour by the naval craft this evening and handed over to the Galle Harbour Police for onward action.
