The remains of an Indian fisherman was recovered by the Navy following a special search operation off Delft Islands yesterday (Jan 13).
The body of the victim who has been identified as 55-year old Karuppiah Munnasami, a resident of Ramanathapuram, India has been handed over to the Jaffna police.
During the search mission, Navy officials also rescued eight Indian fishermen who were trapped in the seas. The rescued fisherman were provided first aid treatment following which they were handed over to the Kankasanthurai Police for further investigations.
Meanwhile, Navy officers claim that they had spotted over 500 Indian trawlers poaching Lankan waters off Delft Islands yesterday (Jan 12). Accordingly, two trawlers and nine Indian fishermen were apprehended by the Navy while attempting to illegally cross the country's maritime borders.
It was also reported that the trawlers had severely damaged the fishing gear of local fishermen including fishing nets
