Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera, addressing a cabinet briefing today (14) admitted that the new government did not have the majority in Parliament.
However, he said that neither does the UNP have a majority either.
Meanwhile, Cabinet spokesman Mahinda Samarasinghe at the same brefing said President Maithripala Sirisena will take action based on the constitution after having received a copy of the no-confidence motion.
He added that Mahinda Rajapaksa will remain as Prime Minister until the President appoints a new Prime Minister and issues a gazette notification to that effect.
The no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was signed by 122 MPs and handed over by the JVP to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya this afternoon.
Accordingly, Speaker Jayasuriya submitted a copy of the document to the President earlier today (Nov 14)
