Viswalingam Manivannan has been elected as the new Mayor of Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) today when the Council convened today to elect a new Mayor.
Among the 45 members of the Council, 21 votes were for Mr Manivannan while former Mayor representing Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Immanuel Arnold secured 20 votes. Four members abstained from voting. The fresh voting to select Mayor was fixed after the two budgets submitted by Mr Arnold were defeated in the council recently.
Mr Manivannan who was elected as a councilor representing Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) was later removed from the party due to internal party issues.
