The eighth Parliament convened today and United National Party (UNP) national list Parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya was elected as the new Speaker. Mr. Jayasuriya was elected unanimously after his name was proposed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and seconded by Nimal Siripala de Silva. President Maithripala Sirisena will address the new parliament at 3.00 p.m on taking formard the January 8 mandate after the general elections.
The Department of National Zoological Gardens is readying enclosures to quarantine two large tortoises that were found stranded 15 kilometers westwards off Pitipana Negombo, today.
