Attention has been drawn towards introducing the National Identity Card (NIC) number at the time of a person's birth, Minister Vajira Abeywardena said.
He pointed out that some suspects connected to the Easter Sunday attacks had been issued two NIC's bearing the same numbers.
In a bid to prevent such incidents from occurring, the NIC number is expected to be given to a person along with the birth certificate, Minister Abeywardena noted.
This initiative is expected to be carried out under the instructions of the Prime Minister, he said.
