Begging on trains has been banned with effect from tomorrow (Dec 1), the Ministry of Railways said.
Accordingly, strict action would be taken against those who flout the law, the ministry warned.
Correction :
Our previous story stated that Western Province SDIG Jagath Abeysiriwardena has instructed Police Stations to round up beggars and send them to the Ridiyagama Detention Centre.
Police Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekara in a statement clarified that no such directives have been issued by the Police Headquarters to Police Stations.
We regret the error.
