Northern fishermen today staged a protest in front of Northern Provincial Council (NPC) in Kaithady, Jaffna against the Indian proposal to grant fishing rights on conditional basis to them in Northern sea.
The protest was organized by Northern Fishermen’s Unity Alliance, which consists of fishermen cooperative societies across five districts in the region. The fishermen demanded that Srilankan government should not consider this kind of proposals that are disadvantageous to their livelihood as they are trying to rebuild their lives after the end of three decades conflict.
The fisherfolk leaders reiterated that they will never allow Indian fishermen to poach in Lankan waters using harmful fishing methods which is posing the threat of permanent destruction of marine resources.
