The Northern Provincial Council (NPC) today passed a resolution unanimously calling upon the international community to set up an international tribunal to investigate alleged human rights violations and crimes against humanity committed in the country citing that past domestic mechanisms failed to deliver justice. When the council convened today Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran submitted an a resolution titled “ Resolution on the need for an international mechanism” to the council and it was seconded by the councilor M.K.Shivajilingam. “ We urge the new leaders of the Sri Lankan government to be courageous enough to work with the international community to set up a credible international mechanism which will deliver justice and put this nation on a path of meaningful reconciliation,” the Resolution said. The Resolution said that they were calling for an Internationa Tribunal after considering the past domestic mechanisms that failed including the International Independent Group of Eminent Person (IIGEP) who were nominated by international donor countries and the Sri Lankan government in 2008 which later lem the group to terminate their process due to lack of support from the government and political will.
