An individual has been arrested over the killing of a Chief Jailor attached to the Welikada Prisons Training School recently, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said today (Aug 20).
The suspect had been nabbed with 2.7 grams of heroin along with another individual in Ambalangoda last week. They are being questioned on a seven-day detention order by the police.
Investigations have revealed that one of the suspects identified as a 27-year old resident of Hikkaduwa is believed to have abetted the killing of the jailor.
T.N.Thihara Jayaratne, the jailor, had been shot dead by two gunmen on a motorcycle, in the Kuligoda area on August 3.
Further questioning on the suspect had led to the recovery of 63 rounds of T-56 ammunition and 15 other SIM cards which had been hidden in his residence.
The suspect is due to be produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate's Court today over charges of being in the possession of heroin. Police will report facts to court on the suspect's alleged involvement in the killing, the spokesman stated.
