A parcel containing heroin floating in the sea has been found by the police on a tip-off from a fisherman in the Sinnapaduwa, Mundalama area, Police said today.
The parcel contained about one kilogram of heroin and had been afloat for a couple of months, investigations revealed.
Police believe that the drugs may have been dropped off to be picked up by another group, but had not been picked up.
They said that it may be due to the risk of getting detected or losing track of the parcel.
It has been a common practice that drugs smuggled into the country from south India is dropped mid-sea and collected by groups who pose off as fishermen.
