One sluice gate of the Laxapana Dam has been opened today (Jun 22), the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
Accordingly, residents in the downstream areas of the reservoir have been advised to remain vigilant, DMC Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department has predicted that wind speeds across the country would increase while rains in the South West part of the country will continue.
During the next few days, wind speeds may clock between 50 – 60 kmph in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North Western, and North Central provinces.
Intermittent showers or thundershowers could be experienced in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces while heavy showers could be expected in the North Western province and Hambantota district.
Rains upto 100 mm could be expected in the Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces while the Western province, and the Galle and Matara districts could experience rains upto 75 mm.
