Operations are underway to rescue families who have refused to relocate and have been trapped by the waters of the Moragahakanda reservoir.
Filling of water at the reservoir began on January 11. Some residents in the surrounding areas claimed that they had not recieved compensation under the current irrigation project. Further the recent rains had caused a rise in the water levels inundating villages and access roads.
Boats are now being deployed to rescuse stranded families in the area, Naula Divisional Secretary Nishantha Karunathilake told a correspondent.
