A total of 124,036 bottles of illicit alcohol was seized from an illegal distillery in Dimbula Pathana yesterday (Feb 04).
Initially the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) had seized a lorry along the Nawalapitiya main road while it was heading towards Ja-Ela with 2300 bottles of illicit liqour.
A questioning that was carried out by the Police on two suspects including the driver of the lorry, led PNB officials to take swift measures to raid the illegal distillery that was run by a woman at her residence.
Four suspects including the woman were then arrested at her residence.
In addition, several items including 48 barrels which were used to store illicit liquor, plastic tubes spanning 10 feet in length, and steel cans were also seized by the PNB.
This is the first ever large-scale distillery that has been sealed off in the estate region.
The suspects will be produced before the Nawalapitiya courts in due course.
