Parliament adjourned till March 21
Parliament has been adjourned till March 21 by Speaker Karu Jayasuriy due to heated arguments by Joint Opposition (JO) MPs. The Speaker was forced to adjourn Parliament as the arguments made it impossible for scheduled Parliamentary proceedings to continue.
Parliament was due to take up four Private Members Motions today while a debate on the "Food, Water and Power Crisis due to the Extreme Drought Condition prevailing in the Country" was also due to be held from this afternoon. All these have now been postponed on account of the adjournment.
There have been heated exchanges in Parliament throughout this week. JO Parliamentarians vehemently protested the ruling made by the Speaker that MPs from the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) could not function as an independent party in Parliament. The protests also forced the Speaker to order Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) and JO Leader Dinesh Gunawardena be removed from Parliament. However, Gunawardena defied the order, leading to a Parliamentary vote to suspend him from Parliament for one week.
