Parliament voted overwhelmingly today to pass the motion in Parliament to place the number of cabinet Ministers in the national government to be formed between the UNP and the SLFP to 48 and the number of state/Deputy Ministers at 45. Sixteen MPs, voted against the motion while 63 were absent when the vote was taken. The cabinet is to be sworn in tomorrow morning. The proposal to increase the number of ministers in the National Government was approved by Parliament with a majority of 127 votes today. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), National Freedom Front (NFF) and MP Udaya Gammanpila voted against the proposal. According to the 19th amendment to the constitution in the event of a National Government being formed the total number of ministers can be increased with the approval ofParliament.
