Parliament to vote on motion to cut funding to ministers

News

Parliament sessions commenced a short while ago under Speaker Karu Jayasuriya. The UNF, JVP and the TNA will today vote on a motion to cut funding to ministries to pay the salaries and perks of all Ministers, Deputy Ministers and State Ministers of the Rajapaksa Government and their personal staff.

Funding cuts will apply to salaries, air travel and other privileges and expenses.

The UPFA has again decided to boycott today's Parliament sittings.

UNP MP Patali Champika Ranawaka presented the motion while UNP MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara seconded it.

Speaking in Parliament, MP Ranawaka insisted that Mr Rajapaksa did not command the confidence of Parliament as shown by him losing four floor votes, and that it was a mystery as to why he continued to remain.

Meanwhile, UNP MP Nalin Bandara said a probe should be conducted to find if there was a link between the killing of two Police Constables in Batticaloa and the alleged threatening tweet sent out by former LTTE commander Karuna Amman. TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran supported Mr Bandara's suggestion, alleging that since October 26, people such as Karuna Amman and EPDP cadres had resurfaced.
