Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena said a no-confidence motion is to be brought against Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera for submitting false statistics in this year’s annual budget, yesterday (Apr 11).
Mr. Gunwardena noted that the measures concerning the no-confidence motion will be taken at the auspicious time of setting off for work during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. He made these remarks while speaking at a media conference held at the residence of Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala.
“As the Economic Research Unit of the Opposition, we will file a no-confidence motion against the Finance Minister for submitting a false budget report,” MP Gunawardena pointed out adding that he would forward this proposal to party leaders as well.
He observed that the Parliament, under Section 148 of the constitution, holds the authority over financial related matters.
If the Finance Minister has not fulfilled his responsibilities in a proper manner and has misled the Parliament, then we cannot trust him any further, the opposition parliamentarian claimed.
Further, he said that the no-faith motion against Minister Samaraweera would be filed based on the Parliament’s Sectoral Oversight Committee Report.
