PeaceAir, an aviation company owned by Sri Lankan businessman Gamini Wettasinghe, is to announce a combined offer to the government: acquiring a major stake in SriLankan Airlines, Mihin Air and also offering to run and manage the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.
Included in the bid is the acquisition of SriLankan Catering Services Ltd. The company, among the bids offered to take over the debt-ridden national carrier, in a letter to the media on Wednesday said a news conference is being held on Thursday to make the above announcements.
“We will be also announcing various strategies on how to operate A 380 aircraft from the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport,” the PeaceAir (Pvt) Ltd Sales Director Rohan Ekanayake said in the invitation to the media.
PeaceAir is among the top two bids offered to the government – now being examined - to take over the national carrier. No decision has been made as yet on acceptance.
PeaceAir has said it has partnered with Lufthansa Consulting, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Germany, in the offer.
Aviation industry veterans however dismissed PeaceAir’s offer saying Mr. Wettasinghe had at various times since the late 1990s tried to purchase or lease aircraft and get a private airline going but hadn’t succeeded. - ENDS -
