The decision on the implementation of the proposed 20th amendment must be vested with the people, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today (Mar 11).
He made these remarks following a meeting held between the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on the proposed 20th amendment which inlcudes the abolition of the executive presidency.
“Those who attempt to defeat the amendment in Parliament are the ones who are afraid of the people,” Mr. Dissanayake, the JVP leader claimed.
He also noted that people from all walks of society must be infused into the political system.
“The two main political parties have now proven that they cannot govern the country properly anymore. Therefore the need for a new political policy framework has now arisen. In order to do that, the JVP is ready to hold talks with other parties despite our differences, on behalf of the people.”
Speaking after the meeting TNA MP R. Sampanthan said that his party had met with the President and Prime Minister and had held discussions regarding the devolution of power. He added that these matters too were discussed with the JVP.
“If we need to bring the main political parties onto the right track, the TNA and the JVP must work in unison in this regard,” Mr. Sampanthan said.
