The National People’s Power (NPP) movement says that the people have not achieved victory despite one candidate emerging victorious at the election.
“Those who have come into power do not have solutions to resolve the socio-economic and political problems faced by the people,” the NPP said in a statement.
The movement nominated Anura Kumara Dissanayake as its presidential candidate who emerged third in the poll.
“We should admit that we have not received more votes as expected,” the statement read expressing disappointment on the number of votes mustered by Dissanayake.
However, the NPP noted that their ability to involve several individuals to discuss about the country’s policies in depth, is a long-term achievement for their movement.
The NPP recalled that it had not engaged in activities such as mudslinging, using foul language, and making cheap promises, during election campaigning as done by some presidential candidates.
“We managed to create a political platform rid of extremism while other parties used extremism and fear as a tool to canvass for votes,” the NPP said.
In its statement, the movement thanked all those who had genuinely supported their campaign during the run-up to the presidential election.
“The hope that we created among the people has not died down. We will continue our fight and will not step back under any circumstances,” the NPP said.
