The writ petition filed against Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, MP Basil Rajapaksa and several others on the destruction of the Wilpattu land has been fixed for hearing on June 28 by the Appeal Court.
This was announced when the petition filed by lawyer Nagananda Kodithuwakku and several others was taken up before Justice Arjuna Obeysekera today (Mar 22).
Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, the Director General of the Wildlife Conservation Department and other relevant individuals have been named as respondents in the case.
The petitioners which include Attorney Kodithuwakku and Senior Journalist Malinda Seneviratne had filed the petition against the illegal construction of houses at the expense of destroying the forest cover at Wilpattu.
Mr. Kodithuwakku, and Mr. Seneviratne, in the petition, had stated that they hope to come forward as presidential candidates in 2020.
