Petition filed by woman arrested for wearing a dress with ship's wheel fixed for Feb 2020

The fundamental rights petition filed by a woman who was arrested for allegedly wearing a garment with the 'Dharmachakra' symbol has been fixed for February 7, 2020 by the Supreme Court.

The petitioner claimed that her unlawful arrest and detention had been carried out in violation of Articles 12 (1) and 13 (1) of the constitution.

Abdul Rahim Mazaina, a Kolongoda resident had filed the petition after she was arrested for wearing a dress containing an imprint of a ship's wheel. She was released on bail recently.

She had named the OIC of the Hasalaka Police Station, the Acting IGP, and the Attorney General as respondents to the petition.

President's Counsel JC Weliamuna appeared for the petitioner along with attorneys Pulasthi Hewamanna and Kavindu Geeganage. Attorney Ganga Wakishtaarachi appeared for the respondents.
