A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court today (May 21) seeking an order be issued to the Elections Commission to conduct the elections for the now defunct Southern Provincial Council.
The petition had been filed by former Southern Provincial Councillor D.V. Upul and two others who will be represented by Attorney Premanath Dolawatte during inquiry of the petition.
The Chairman and the other members of the Elections Commission have been named as respondents in the case.
The petitioners claim that the voting rights of the people have been violated since the government has been delaying the elections by citing the the absence of a delimitation report to conduct the polls.
The term of the Southern Provincial Council ended on April 10 this year.
