Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe visited the Batticaloa International Airport today (Oct 4) to observe its development work, the Prime Minister's Office said.
Issuing a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said that Rs 1400 million has been spent on the runway lighting system and a new passenger terminal.
Batticaloa Airport was opened for civil aviation services in 2018 while Cabinet approval was granted recently to transform the airport into an International Airport.
A runway strip spanning 1.06 kilometres is currently being constructed as the government seeks to transform the airport to facilitate international flights.
Meanwhile, the Palali Airport will be developed and renamed as the Jaffna International Airport and is expected to be opened by the middle of October.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
