Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday (Aug 25) laid the foundation for the Thanthirimale reservoir - the third largest reservoir in Sri Lanka which runs across the lower Malwathu Oya.
According to the Irrigation Ministry, the reservoir would supply water to the Northern and North Central Provinces. It is also expected to create 2,000 acres of new lands for paddy cultivation.
In addition, the project would provide 5 million cubic meters of drinking water for residents of Anuradhapura and Mannar while also producing 4.28 Gigawatt hours (GWH) of Hydro power energy annually.
Addressing the opening, the Prime Minister pointed out that Sri Lanka must be uplifted by engaging in export trade with other countries and becoming an export hub - a trademark which existed during the Kotte and Rajarata kingdoms in the island.
